Crab Cove in Alameda, California - Plein-Air Painting

(to see the details click HERE)
................................................
The hazy cool morning in Alameda Crab Cove grew later into a lovely sunny day; but in my painting I wanted to pick up the beginning of the day when the bird is thinking of its breakfast, the tide is getting lower, and the wind surfers on the background just started setting up their sails for an active weekend fun.
...................................................
And here the report from my fellow artists and their arts. It was great to be with the group of them to discuss our art works, laugh, share, and inspire each other:

Norway Fjord

..........................
One of my dear art collectors sent me a photo of the beautiful Fjord from her trip to Norway.

Fjord, from the norse "fjörðr", in English means "where you travel across". Also, it has the same origin as the norwegian word "ferd", English "fare" or "travel".  (Source: Wikipedia.no). Created my moving glaciers more than 2.5 million years ago, Fjords are some of the most dramatic landscape features on Earth. Just imaging how the glacier was "slicing" the mountains, moving the rocks aside: and, how later on the sea found its way there.

When I was painting this piece I admired the monumental silence of the mountains, calm water and a crisp air. And I hope I could bring my admiration into my art.

Get Positive Affirmation - or, Write Your Own - Abundance

Fragment

This is my gift to you; but only if you are ready :0)

I've painted this art piece (which is not fully a landscape, nor it is a still life, or even a floral) but it was a pure inspiration. The image came from one sunny fresh morning. And the idea appeared after learning one Positive Affirmation that I've heard from Cheryl Richardson:

Please read it again, but this time very slow trying to FEEL each word...

I made a print with these words for myself and placed in my studio.Permanently. And I'd love to give either this affirmation or a blank image to anyone who wants it. Just shoot me an e-mail and I will send you a high resolution file, which is good to print up to 8"x10"page (don't worry, I am not going to use your e-mail commercially). And please, don't get me wrong, I did place the prints here, where people can order larger formats, canvases, or cards. But I thought positively and wanted to share a good things for a good cause too. And I hope you like it :0)

Winnie-The-Pooh - illustrate a book - Workshop

Detailed Images are in Art for Kids Gallery
......................................
The work week was quite busy for me. Between the preparation for Tao House Art Show, attending CWA meeting and working in a Concord Gallery I also had a workshop in Martinez Library on Tuesday.

This time I taught kids how to apply watercolor wet-on-wet (we played with the Winnie's head for that), dry-on-dry ( his honey pot and a tree were just asking be painted that way), and we even learned what is the difference to paint free-hand vs following the given lines.

It is amazing how the kids can absorb the information. Quick and easy! One little boy loved wet-on-wet technique so much that he painted entire second piece of art all over using not only all area of the painting but also mixing all available colors from his palette.

Fun! Fun! Fun!

Writer's Desk - Eugene O'Neill - Tao House

realistic still life
Detailed Image HERE

Here is the Eugene O'Neill desk. The bright metal Ink Bottle and a Ink Blotter caught my attention when I've visited Tao House Museum last weekend. Although, one detail on this painting was actually not on the desk, one pretty significant detail. Can you guess what?

Here is the interesting fact: Eugene O'Neill actually did not use neither ink nor a typewriter to create his plays. He used a simple pencil. And later on, his wife Carlotta would transform his handwritten notes using a  typewriter.

I've decided to paint a pencil here in order complete the story of this still life. And even composition wise the third non-flat object asked to be there...

This original and another one on Tao House ( Barn and Old Wagon) will be presented at Village Theatre Art Gallery in Danville at Tao House - Through Artists' Eyes exhibition until September 22, 2012.

Grandma! Let's Go On Vacation!

Detailed Image HERE

My friend shared a few of her granddaughter's recent pictures in case I choose some of them to paint. When I looked at this one, I couldn't stop thinking how great it would be on a painting or on the card. The toddler's hands movement, the smile, the red hat, all of this was just calling for a great vacation theme, isn't it :0). I can't say the name of the girl due to a privacy (Thank God the glasses protect her identity ;-) too)  ; but I can tell you her name shines like morning Sun.

Eugene O'Neill Sacred Place - Tao House Ranch

Realistic Painting
Original SOLD
Detailed Image HERE

Today I've visited a beautiful ranch of the famous American writer Eugene O'Neill.

My sister, I, and a bunch of great artist-friends came to explore and if weather permitted paint Plein-Air. The day was gorgeous; and I grabbed my brush. After visiting the house we explored the ranch. I decided to paint this white barn and an old beat-up wagon.

The ranch is now a part of the National Parks system. Several times a year there are performances of Eugene O'Neill's plays as well as the Artists Days. And even we visited Tao House ranch in a quiet Saturday, it was still interesting to see students there who were rehearsing for a tomorrow performance. The barn was filled with theater spirit, I've heard the part of the play and felt as I was a part of the really sacred act that brought live a play that was written more than half century ago.

Did you know, that...

America's only Nobel Prize winning playwright, Eugene O'Neill, chose to live in Northern California at the height of his writing career. Isolated from the world and within the walls of his home, O'Neill wrote his final and most memorable plays; The Iceman Cometh, Long Day's Journey Into Night, and A Moon for the Misbegotten.

Raspberries - Jam Labels Project

berry flower
Detailed Image HERE

When I was painting Raspberries for the Jam Labels Project I was remembering my Grandma's garden, where those sweet berries were growing almost like in a wild jungle high enough for me and my baby-sister to get lost there. What could be better than to going to the Raspberry "forest" in a warm Summer morning and picking up a fuzzy, warm, glowing from inside berry!
Later on, we would help Grandma to collect a cup or two of these berries for her kitchen magic cooking. My Grandma made yummy jams ( in Russian its called "Vareniie") out of them; and we usually had it at winter time remembering the good Summer days.

And here is a first trial of Raspberry Jam Labels. Ah, Ah, Yummy!! :0)

Jam Session

Detailed Image HERE

 Detailed Image HERE

Just like an informal meeting where musicians play together in a Jam Session, my dear customer and I are working on a lengthy but absolutely enjoyable and creative project - A Jam Labels Session. Our first creations involve my Apricot Painting and White Peach painting. I am learning a ton of tricks with PhotoShop to clear the backgrounds and make the files appropriate for the labels. The colors for the labels should be rather bold and bright than containing an artistic realism with complimentary shadows, vanishing perspective, etc. The labels might be as small as 1"x1" and they still should "read" the image and letters.

Here are our fist attempts of the Jam Labels Project, which as you can see are definitely made with Love:

Yes, there is still so much to do and play with, but already, just by looking at them my mouth is watering and craving one of these delicious jams!

Stay tuned for more Jam Labels creations :0)

Happy Birthday My Friend

My Dear Friend from Russia turned slightly more than two times twenty last weekend. I made a virtual flowers bouquet for her and created a movie, where each shot (except the credits) represents one year of her life.

Link to the Movie is HERE
(or you can watch it by clicking the movie below).

I chose a little bit nostalgic music made by a composer from Saint Petersburg as it reminded me the times when my friend and I were just 16 years old walking along the Neva River in a beautiful White Night; and, we were discussing way too complicated topics for the teenagers about life, love, and purpose.

Nursery Series - Dogtor & Firedog

Detailed Image: HERE

Detailed Image: HERE

These two additions to my Nursery Series are going to be hung in one boys room. The baby is due in October, but his parents are already decorating his room. Mom and Dad have two cute little dogs: a boy and a girl. Mom works as a paramedic and a future Dad is a firefighter. I thought it would be great to dress one of the dog as a Dogtor, and another as a FireDog.. A little boy will learn from his first days of his life about such needed and important professions :0)

Every Bee Wants Some Honey

Zoom HERE

This small 8"x8" Watercolor painting came to my mind after one Yummy Commission, when my Art Collector had a fabulous idea incorporate my watercolor Bee On The Flower into the honey labels. It was a gift for her friend who makes her own Honey (yeah, yeah, bees make it; but she does work too :0).

We rolled our sleeves and went to VistaPrint to design the labels. And even though it seems easy to do so, I've learned a few tricks on better alignment of the painting for round labels; on font preferences, and so on.

Zoom HERE

But we did not stop at the label creations only. The little Bee On The Flower called for a several designs of some greeting cards.
(the family last name is changed due to the privacy)

And besides simple Notecards, I also created a Happy Birthday , Don't Worry Bee Happy, and Bee The One cards. It was so much fun to use two brains for this creative project. When working with the Client together,  the Artist has such a great opportunity to learn what people like and appreciate; it also triggers some new art ideas as well. But this will be a subject for the next post. Stay tuned! :)
