Cold vs Hot

I was painting the same lovely model (Morning Rose) on two different quality papers. One rose is painted on Hot Pressed Arches and another on Cold. ............................................................................................................................. Question: Can you guess which is where?! ............................................................................................................................. It is quite a challenge to move the paint around the hot pressed paper when you used to the qualities of cold pressed one. The surface of Hot Pressed is so smooth that sometimes you think that paint does not stick to it ( especially when I tried to lift the color with sponge or paper towel to make the background wash look like the background). ............................................................................................................................. However, I enjoyed painting petals on both Cold and Hot. Both of them held the moisture quite long (though hot pressed has shorter time and needs wetting the painted area generously) ............................................................................................................................. Ok, here is the answer: when I was working on Hot Pressed paper, my hand went automatically picking up warmer colors for the rose ( I guess it was philological :).. Yes , yes, the top one is on Hot Pressed and the bottom rose is on Cold Pressed..

Dancing Pearls

Irina Sztukowski

One day pearls had a dream, they wanted to dance. They sneaked into ballet slippers and waited for their turn... .......................................................................................................................... I love watching ballet. My childhood city Saint Petersburg is famous by Kirov (now Mariinsky) Theater. I used to come there when I was a kid and always was curious how those tiny teeny girls can dance on their tiptoes barely touching the ground. It seemed so easy so light. When I was around ten my Dad helped the theater to pack their costumes for a business trip; and, when they learned he has two girls they presented him (oh Gosh!) two pair of cute little slippers.. My sister and I tried to dance in them and realized that it is not that easy and light. Good life lesson... ......................................................................................................................... I painted pearls and ballet slippers together as when looking at them I know how it is difficult go achieve the light flawless dance performance and it is hard to get a pearl from the deep sea. Yet I admire their beauty and loveliness with all my heart and appreciate AWE moment when I see the dancing ballerina or a great piece of jewelry. ........................................................................................................................ This painting was my first experience on Artistico Fabriano paper. I love its smooth fine surface. ........................................................................................................................ 8"x10" Winsor & Newton Watercolor on 140 Cold Press Fabriano

Tulips on Fire

One of the best and the most amazing things for the Artist is when he/she can share the art with other people. And it is always great when people admire your art, and when people want your art - is the most grateful moments. Although, for me personally it is hard sometimes to detach from my paintings. That's probably why I sell more prints than paintings ;)... Original paintings are like babies. But hey, children suppose to grow up and eventually they will make outside the nest. Today one of my favorite customers sent me an e-mail with the subject: " I have to have it!" She chose this painting of tulips. When I painted this one I really wanted to show the sun showing through the petals penetrating them through red making it pink. The game of three colors (red, pink, and yellow) reminded me of a fire. And I called this painting "Tulips on Fire". I am glad that now these tulips will sparkle in someones' house :) ................................................................................................................... 8"x10" Watercolor on 140lb Cold Press Arches

Red on Green

Here is the second attempt to conquer Aquabord. When using this board the best result can be achieved by dabbing watercolor into a previously well-wetted surface. The patience is the key; although you really need to be fast as the board is drying very quickly. I am sure I will be back to using Old Sweet 140/300lb Arches; it is just always interesting to try something new................................................................................ 5"x 5" Winsor & Newton Watercolor on Aquabord

Testing Aquabord

I am exploring different surfaces for watercolors. Just recently I have purchased Aquabord made by Ampersand in Austin, TX. I always wanted to try something new. This board is not made of paper; however, it allows watercolor to stick to the surface. Although it was hard to move the paint around and achieve the mixing effect with the smooth edges. The surface dries very quickly so if you want wet-on-wet you better put lots of water. Also, I have noticed that this board pretty much does not allow you to use layers. The color would better look if you mix it on a pallet and place it in one touch. It was very interesting experience to paint on this board. All what I learned painting on paper was challenged. The good part is that the board does not need to be framed and after using fixative you can basically place it on a wall or put on the shelf. I've placed it on the tabletop easel. This art work can make a good gift; and, even it can play as a unique Valentine's Card :) ....................................................................................................................... 5"x5" Winsor & Newton Watercolor on Aquabord
