Bee Study

In this sketch I've tried to capture almost invisible yellow honey-bee on the pink flower. I used Strathmore 140 lb Cold Press paper and confirmed one more time to myself that this paper calls for fast sketches with not much corrections allowed in comparison with Arches, which is more forgiving and which is better absorbing paper.
(Watercolor, 6"x8")

Speedy Painting: Is this a Challenge?

This is my first time when I try The Twenty Minute Challenge http://twentyminutechallenge.blogspot.com/ . I was pleasantly surprised that it was indeed challenge for me. I have been painting pretty much all my life for more than 30 years and (what a shock!) this one was not easy. I guess when you paint and time yourself you really need to pick your battles. I was debating to put more water or not, to use several shades of blue or just couple; to pick one color for shadows or make them diversified. The painting is in watercolor, size 8 x 10". The subject I chose is the Pacific Ocean Shore near Monterey California. I can't wait to try more challenges :).

Watercolor Demo

My niece Anastasia and I went last night to the meeting of California Watercolor Association http://www.californiawatercolor.org/ where we had a wonderful time watching demo of recently featured artist from Watercolor magazine David Savellano http://davidsavellano.com/ . The evening was delightful. We even had 40 minutes for our own watercolor sketch from the given picture. I loved the atmosphere of the meeting. All people there (around 50 or so) were truly doing what they really like. The feeling was like in the church but the worship was given to my favorite medium..

The Man and The Sea

When I was a kid I liked to look at people and imagine who they are, what they do, what they think right the same moment.. What do you think this man is up to? Use your imagination, go ahead.
Ok, I knew what was on that man’s mind. It is my man. We went to Monterey for my birthday (this is the second sketch I made that day). Even we had a very good time; few days ago we learned that he had cancer (it is all gone now Thank God, but that day we didn’t know the outcome). That day we learned to enjoy every spec of the second of our lives even if it is just sitting on the rock and watching the sea. And every time I look at this sketch, I remind myself what’s important in life.

Plain Air

Just a small sketch of the see shore.. I almost forgot how it is different to get out of your studio and sit under the sun painting with the people wondering around and picking at your work...I wrapped it pretty fast as you see. That day I made two sketches; this the first one. The story starts in Monterey on my birthday day.. stay tuned!

White On White

Prints of this painting are available HERE
This painting is very precious to me.
My sister, who lives in Russia and who is the best photographer I’ve ever seen in my life (http://www.batkova.spb.ru/gkrbIshi.htm and ttp://www.batkova.spb.ru/gorod1.htm ), made the picture basically out of nothing. She took white vase, white flower, simple glass, and simple pitcher; she placed it all against old white wall and viola the still life “White on White” was born.
Incredible!
When I saw the picture, I begged her to give it to me. I wanted to paint it so bad. Later on, when I finished the painting, I gave it as a gift to my best friend who lives in Russia. She really wanted to have it in her house. When painting was done my mom (who visited us those days) had to bring this piece from America to Russia on a plane.
That’s how a little piece of mind can travel through times, webs, above the oceans and transform from a small thought to a huge desire.

Something from Archive

It seems it was so long ago, but so many changes happen to these two. My son and my dog. She was 103 human years old when she left. And this sweet young teen is now a strong man that learns how to serve his Country in the US Army. I pulled this painting that I made (gosh) 4-5 years ago and all that thoughts came to my head at once.. The main thought I guess: Treasure the Moment! Appreciate what you have NOW!

Question of The Day:

Why Caveman started drawing on the walls? We know they were hoping for luck and talked to their Gods that way; but. still why?

East Bay Area Artists Guild (http://ebag.wordpress.com/)opened the show at DVC Library. My Japanese Garden made it to this show. Looks pretty good! Although when I painted this painting in my studio it looked to me so big, and when I see it on a wall in public place, it is SO small! Well, everything is in prospective, isn't it?
