Illustrating A Book Workshop In Danville California

Last week I shared my painting knowledge with the members of the Book Club at Danville library. Young readers, grade 4 and 5, met to read a book Planting The Trees Of Kenya: The Story Of Wangari Maathai by Claire A. Nivola. It delivers a true story about a winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Wangari Maathai who returned to her home country of Kenya and helped to save the farmland by planting the trees.

I was presenting a workshop: How To "Plant" The Trees On The Paper. For my lesson, I have chosen several techniques to show to the kids.

First we did a background in wet-on-wet technique and later on (when paper was bone-dry) we planted a Whimsical Tree, full of happy branches, swirls, and birds.

As you see, each tree was telling its own story:

Children also learned how to paint Fall trees using dabbing technique and even a sponge.
In one short session we probably "planted" one hundred of those trees. The Fall landscapes filled the room with the bright colors. I swear, if we didn't have so much fun that day, we could even hear our painted birds signing on the branches of those trees ;0)

And even though, not all the trees in Danville, California, were yellow, orange and red yet; our trees, on the paper, were surely indicating a beautiful Fall season in its full glory!

Interior Decoration With Designers Prints - Poppies and Sunflowers

I was excited to learn that the company I was offering the prints of my art before; recently, this company entered an additional business. Now, my art is presented at DesignersPrints.com website, which is available for designers companies to purchase.

These days, I have chance to look at my art with the new point of view.Yes, it is known that the main purpose of visual art is to decorate: living room, kitchen, bedroom or kids room. But a whole new segment I have not considered before. All of a sudden, DesignerPrints opened my horizons to some new venues: hotels, business offices, hospitals, educational facilities; apparently  they are all looking for a good art to put up on their walls.

And I am glad I should not worry about signing the contracts with all that businesses while flying from state to state with my art portfolio. The company is working for me. Yey! My important responsibility though stays the same: It is - to create art; and, I am doing it, aren't I ?

:0)

But as a person with the wild imagination, I really wanted to fantasize how would my art pieces look on a wall, let's say, a suite of a hotel, or a waiting room at the dentist office, or even at VA hospital..

I created imaginary wall and decorated it, just for fun.

Here is, for example, my new (quite decorative as I think) painting of Poppies touched by a gentle breeze.

Hm, how would this piece look on a wall?
Here you go!
watercolor canvas prints
Just like a garden, or at least window to the garden....

And here is one experimental art piece that I've recently created with thick acrylic paint on a wooden board (a Sunflowers painting that I jokingly called Vincent Van Gogh Would Cry).

How would this painting, enhanced with multiple designs, look on a wall?
Here you go!!

Would Vincent cry now? ;)

Find A Cat in Benicia - Plein-Air Painting Session

building mountains shore watercolor

Benicia is a small town in Northern California. It is only 15 minutes from where I leave. Cozy streets with restaurants, gift shops, and a beautiful San Francisco Bay shore attract a lot of artists. CWA plein-air artists group had the same idea: to come, to see, to paint.
We made an attempt to come here last year, but October rain chased us away. This year the weather couldn't be better.
I was sitting on the shore and panting a visitors center with its palm trees. The building covered pretty much all the bay beauty; but you can still see Mountain Diablo, sparkles on a water, and even a fisherman in his little boat.

If you look closely, you also will find a few birds and....a..... cat! I am not telling you where it is. You will need to look for it :0)

A little bit of Benicia's history:
In spite of the fact that now it is a tiny little town, back in 19th century, for more than a year, Benicia was serving as California Capital in 1853.
In 1860 there was an area dedicated to US Army Arsenal, an armory place. Historical building are still bringing joy to the visitors: The Clock Tower, The Camel Barn (yes, yes, they used to have stables with camels for transportation).
Being a major connector in transportation business back in 1860s, now Benicia is a quiet lovely place to visit for  fun and for arts. It has regular art exhibitions and art openings in its Galleries, promotes arts through Open Studio events, provides many art classes for children and adults. And needless to say, it is a great place to visit for a plein-air painting session.

All artists from CWA had fun painting different places in Benicia that day:

St. John's Ranch - Mt Shasta County

Shasta Mountain County

Shasta County Landscape painting realism in watercolor

Two lovely country scenes were waiting for me when last week long trip get-away brought us to Mountain Shasta county, which is five hours drive north from San Francisco Bay Area.

We were camping in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the fields and mountains.. Not a sound of civilization, no Internet, not even a cell phone coverage. This truly made me think about serenity and peace..

I was painting both artworks in plein-air style, sitting under the warm California Sun. The light breeze was helping to dry my paints that I could move on and on. And only mooing of the cows and birds tweets accompanied me while I was creating.
I hope the peace and serenity are shown in my works; as, usually, the artist's feeling influences the paintings

Apples and Lime - Putting Hands To Work

realism in watercolor
Click on Image for a detailed view

I am making a very good progress on my complex Old Masters/ Dutch Style still life (my favorite thing to paint actually)..

This is a complete, so to speak, fragment. Complete, but a Fragment. I played with the virtual frame to show that even a fragment can be sufficient when speaking about composition. The only thing I would change if I set this still life as a separate thing; I'd place the knife towards the apples.. But because it is a fragment, it will point "out" of the painting ..

Meantime, the drawing in the class required some serious hand work.. I've put my hands and some other students hands
TO WORK

Something Expanded And Something Shrunk - Welcoming Fall In My Studio

Impressionism in Watercolor

Just before a busy weekend I wanted to loosen-up and paint something pretty large, bright, fast and pretty.. I took as the suggestion my mini-artwork of the Fall Landscape (see the previous post HERE

And instead of 1"x1.5" I made a painting 18"x24"
So the expansion was something like that:
A small forest grew into a large one in the matter of minutes.

Meantime, I had quite meticulous work coming-up this weekend; and, many more hours to paint.

My friend artist and I met in my studio for a painting session. I've set up a few still life objects and we grabbed the brushes. All of a sudden, with us two, with at least three still life sets and two puppies on the floor my studio SHRUNK!!!
And for the next 10 hours on Saturday, and good 5 hours on Sunday, we had to watch where to step in order not to crash into something or somebody.
But it was fun! Though the time flew by too quickly.

My friend Vera completed her beautiful still life in acrylic:
9"x12" Still Life by Vera Lysenko

I started a larger still life, and will need to work on it for at least 10 more hours.
So far the fragment is done:

Realism in Watercolor by Irina Sztukowski

Stay tuned, the whole thing is coming soon :0)

A Gift From The Garden - A Happy Apple

Still life garden fruit

Introducing a Garden Apple, the one that didn't come from the grocery store!

I love freshly picked apples for their gentle highlights, for almost fuzzy glowing from inside skin. Unlike the store-bought apples with the layer of wax and days on the shelf, the garden fruits seem to be more happy..

This apple surely was a happy camper. The leaves on the branch were like spreading hands..and the fruit was smiling:
"Eat me! Oh, no, wait, paint me first!"
