Under The Tuscan Sun - San Gimignano Watercolor Painting Tuscany Italy
Italy always will be the country of my first choice to travel. This painting was created recently for my Around The World Travel series, which I announced recently (HERE)
I’ve painted this small house in San Gimignano in watercolor and ink. What attracted me there is that the door into the house and the gate were opened as if a viewer was invited to share a simple life of the host; or, just come and relax on the bench with a cup of espresso and have a nice light conversation with the owner or just watch passing by tourists. Here is a little bit of highlights about this beautiful place, San Gimignano.
San Gimignano is a small medieval town in the hills of Tuscany. It belongs to Siena province which locates at the north-central part of Italy. San Gimignano is well known as the Town of Fine Towers, it had hundreds of towers that rich citizens built in the name of their wealth and prosperity. When you come behind the thick ancient wall into the town, you feel as if you dove into the history centuries and centuries ago. Its medieval architecture astonishes the visitors with well-preserved grand towers, stone streets and numerous stairs. The architectural landscape of San Gimignano has Romanesque and Gothic styles, but they are all stay in unison with the ancient town’s character. I was amazed how monochrome, mostly beige, buildings, one after another, were not looking alike and each had its own story. Some of the churches of San Gimignano dated back to 14th and 15th centuries, they have frescoes one should definitely see to get a feeling of medieval time. Also, San Gimignano is famous for its saffron, the tradition of harvesting saffron comes from medieval times, when the cultivation of this admired and prestigious crocus flower, stretched all over the territory surrounding the city. San Gimignano white wine is made of famous Vernaccia grape, which is grown in the surrounding hills of this ancient town.
I keep painting and keep enjoying my virtual trips to Italy. Watercolor allows me to apply my artist's vision to the Italian scenery.
Here are a few Italian scenes that I've painted :
